Camp Update – November 6, 2009

“If there be any point in which the Christian church ought to keep its fervor at a white heat, it is concerning missions. If there be anything about which we cannot tolerate lukewarmness, it is the matter of sending the gospel to a dying world.” – Charles Haddon Spurgeon.

Weekend Ministry – Pam Rankin will be hosting Manor Church from Lancaster for their annual youth retreat at Camp Conquest using Lutz and Staff Lodges.

A District Singles Retreat will be led this weekend by Rich Russell out of Sprecher Lodge.

Ken Keener will be hosting his Sunday School class from Grace Church of Lititz for a picnic on Sunday afternoon.

NAC – This Saturday is the District Quizzing and Nurturing Abilities for Christ competitions at New Beginnings in Myerstown. Emilee and Grant are on a quiz team and Emilee will be playing a violin solo. I get to be there all day recruiting for summer camp volunteers and campers.

Ministerium – The NAF Ministerium will be at Willow Valley on Tuesday. Mike will be attending to give the camp report as well as interact with our district pastors. Their next event is a retreat in February held here at Camp Conquest.

Deer Park Camp – On Wednesday night, Mike will be traveling to a Mennonite Camp just across the state line into New York for a Thursday camp directors meeting. Deer Park focuses on serving inner city youth. He will be riding with the directors of Woodcrest Retreat and Black Rock Retreat.

Staff Meeting – Next Friday, we are having an all day staff meeting at Mike's house. Our time will be focused on setting the pace for the upcoming year.

Board Meeting – On Saturday, November 14th our board will be traveling to Gretna Glenn Camp in Lebanon, PA to have an all day session. This annual event allows the board an extended time to work through the budget, the calendar and one or two agenda items that require an extended time of discussion.

Volunteer Corner – Thank you to Carl, Barry, Bud, Diana, Roger and Adam who put in about 36 hours this week mostly in maintenance and guest group hosting.

Camp Update – October 29, 2009

“Ah, the memories of summer camp – the smell of the woods, songs around the campfire, new friends, fun, fun, fun. And the novel H1N1 outbreak? Not so much fun.” In an article in Compass Point, Sept 2009, a publication of the Association of Camp Nurses, I read of a swine flu outbreak at a Christian Camp in NY. They handled it well, but I was encouraged by how God protected us this summer. Thank you to all our summer camp nurses who faithfully serve and volunteer.

Maintenance Kudos Doug Tressler and Barry Miller along with a number of volunteers have been doing an excellent job of taking care of the little things. We have created a list and checked it off, and we have created another list. Ken and I were talking the other day about how great it is to have these two men working to create a distraction free environment at Camp Conquest – Thank you and great job guys!

Volunteer Corner over 950 hours were logged this week. Most of that was during our Father Daughter Program. Each Father and Daughter volunteered for one hour over the weekend splitting and stacking firewood. Additionally we had a great staff: Ali, Andria, Barry, Betty, Brenda, Bryan, Carissa, Cindy, Dan, Denise, Doug, Earl, Florence, Jessica, John, Judy, Kate, Kathy, Ken, Laura, Laurie, Lori, Nathan, Randy, Shawn, Tim, and Yara. We also had Phil who finished the guard rails, Bob who installed a new phone system, Carl helping with maintenance, Brian who serviced the propane units, and the paid staff helped out a little as well – Ken, Mike, Rich, Pam, Deb, Doug …

Father Daughter Weekend We ended up with 31 pairs. The rain and the flu seemed to hurt our numbers a little (our cap is 39 pairs). In spite of the rain we were able to run most of our program activities. Again the candlelight dinner was a highlight – thanks to Kathy for the extra effort. Rich and the volunteer staff did an excellent job.

New Phone System Barry was able to secure and install for us a new (to us) phone system. We are experimenting with it even now. Eventually, it will have voicemail. If we hang up on you over the next month, please have patience with us as we learn how to use the new technology.

Weekend Ministry We have 50 people coming Thursday to Sunday for a discipleship program called Journey In Faith, Via de Christo. They will be using the entire facility.
